What is
Patient Engagement in Research/Patient-Oriented Research?
The
Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) defines patient-oriented research
as a continuum of research that engages patients as partners, focuses on
patient-identified priorities, and improves patient outcomes. Patient Oriented
Research is conducted by multidisciplinary teams where the goal is to apply the
best evidence from all stakeholders to build a high quality and effective
healthcare system.
Examples of
how patients can contribute in research include:
·
Setting research priorities Member
of research committee Data
analysis
·
Sharing patient perspectives/stories Identifying outcomes Collaborator/data

·
Accessing patient participants Disseminating
research findings
We
are interested in patient-oriented research in primary health care. “Primary health care is the first contact and
continuing care of individuals and families by primary medical care providers
(i.e. family physicians) and interdisciplinary primary care by a team as well
as health promotion with groups of patients.” Health Canada (2011)
